Windows in a virtual machine
Running a full copy of Windows inside VirtualBox, VMware or KVM on Linux, then installing the app there.
A virtual machine gives the app a full Windows environment. The weak spot is graphics. VirtualBox gives Windows guests Direct3D 11 and OpenGL 4.1 at most, which limits apps that need newer GPU features.
- Needs a Windows license and enough RAM for two operating systems.
- VirtualBox: Windows 8 and newer guests get Direct3D 11.0 or 11.1 and OpenGL 4.1.
